KISUMU, Kenya — The County Government of Kisumu has designated Victoria Sub-County Hospital as a regional hub for specialised diagnostic services, in a move expected to improve early detection of cancer and sickle cell disease in the Lake Region.

The new hub will serve residents of Kisumu County, neighbouring counties and communities across the border who seek specialised health services in Kisumu.

The county government says the initiative is aimed at moving healthcare from treating diseases after they become serious to detecting and managing them at an early stage.

Cancer screening laboratory to open

One of the key programmes will be the establishment of a Cancer Screening and Diagnostic Laboratory at Victoria Sub-County Hospital.

The laboratory is being developed in partnership with the Africa Smart Cities Alliance (ASCA) and will offer advanced cancer screening and diagnostic services.

According to the county government, the laboratory is expected to be officially launched during the Africa Smart Cities Conference later in August 2026.

The facility will support efforts to identify cancer earlier, when treatment can have better outcomes.

Cancer remains a major health concern in Kenya, with many patients seeking medical attention when the disease is already at an advanced stage.

The new laboratory is therefore expected to strengthen access to screening and diagnosis within Kisumu and the wider Lake Region.

Sickle cell screening programme

Victoria Sub-County Hospital will also host a Sickle Cell Screening and Diagnostic Programme in collaboration with Yunigen and its partners.

The programme will focus on early detection, diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of sickle cell disease.

The county says the programme will help strengthen access to testing and improve the ability of health workers to identify people living with the condition and connect them to appropriate care.

More advanced laboratory services

The regional hub will also see the expansion of specialised diagnostic services, including molecular diagnostics and advanced laboratory capacity.

These services are expected to improve the ability of health facilities to diagnose diseases more accurately and support better treatment decisions.

The county government will also coordinate cancer screening programmes across Kisumu County and the wider Lake Region.

This could help create a more coordinated approach to cancer screening and referral, particularly for people living in areas where specialised diagnostic services are limited.

Shift towards preventive healthcare

The development of the diagnostic hub is part of Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o’s administration’s strategy to strengthen preventive healthcare.

The county says the focus is on detecting diseases early, reducing the burden of serious illnesses and improving health outcomes.

Instead of waiting for patients to develop severe symptoms before receiving specialised care, the county wants more residents to access screening and diagnosis earlier.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen Kisumu’s position as a healthcare centre for the wider Lake Region.

Kisumu seeks more partnerships

The County Government of Kisumu says it is open to working with national government agencies, development partners, research and academic institutions and private sector organizations to improve specialised healthcare.

The partnerships are expected to support innovation, research, technology and access to modern diagnostic services.

The county’s Department of Medical Services, Public Health and Sanitation says its vision is to build a globally competitive county health service that supports a healthy and productive population.

Its mission is to provide responsive, sustainable, technology-driven, evidence-based and client-centred health services.

What the new hub means for residents

For residents of Kisumu and the wider Lake Region, the designation of Victoria Sub-County Hospital as a specialized diagnostic hub could mean:

  • Better access to cancer screening and diagnosis.
  • Improved sickle cell screening and management.
  • More advanced laboratory testing.
  • Earlier detection of serious diseases.
  • Better coordination of cancer screening programmes.
  • Reduced need to travel far outside the region for some specialised diagnostic services.

The county government says the ultimate goal is to make quality, specialised and affordable healthcare more accessible to residents of Kisumu and neighbouring communities.
