Flooding has once again disrupted life across the Lake Region following weeks of heavy rainfall that have left thousands displaced and livelihoods destroyed.

Communities in Nyando, Ahero, and parts of Kisumu County are among the hardest hit, with rivers bursting their banks and water sweeping through homes and farms. Residents have been forced to move to higher ground, with many taking shelter in schools and churches.

Farmers have suffered significant losses, especially rice growers whose fields have been submerged just before harvest. Local roads have also been damaged, cutting off access to markets and essential services.

Health officials have raised concerns over possible outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera and malaria due to stagnant water and poor sanitation conditions.

Relief efforts are ongoing, with humanitarian agencies distributing food and basic supplies. However, many affected families say assistance is still not enough to meet their needs.

Experts have linked the severity of the floods to climate change, poor drainage systems, and encroachment on riparian land. Leaders are now calling for long-term solutions, including improved infrastructure and relocation plans for high-risk areas.

As rains continue, residents are urged to remain cautious and move to safer areas.
